Replacing Upwork or Fiverr with another profile does not automatically fix client acquisition. The useful question is how you want to become visible: by bidding on open jobs, publishing portfolio proof, passing screening, or using a professional network.
This guide is about finding future work through another channel. It does not tell you to move an Upwork or Fiverr origin relationship outside its rules. If an existing Upwork client wants to work elsewhere, read the rules for moving an existing Upwork relationship before changing where the work or payment happens.
There is no universal winner here. A platform can suit your workflow and still have little relevant demand in your niche. The five options below are grouped by observable mechanics, with claims checked against official pages on August 9, 2026. Country access, account eligibility, and live inventory can vary, so confirm them inside your own account before investing heavily.
The four ways these platforms help you win work
Open bidding puts public projects in front of freelancers and asks them to submit bids or proposals. Freelancer.com is the clearest example in this group. PeoplePerHour also uses proposals, while adding packaged offers that clients can browse. If proposal spend is the problem you are trying to escape, first measure what bidding is costing you. If you are comparing a paid Upwork plan instead of leaving the marketplace, run the Freelancer Plus break-even check before treating a subscription as a substitute for better targeting.
Portfolio and inbound discovery makes your proof of work part of the acquisition engine. Contra combines public freelance jobs with profiles and project workflow. This model still needs positioning. A portfolio that tries to serve everyone gives clients little reason to choose you.
Vetted matching puts screening before access to the network. Toptal says applicants complete a multistage screening process before they can view eligible jobs and be matched according to profile and availability.
Professional network discovery starts with identity, connections, recommendations, and direct messages. LinkedIn Services fits this lane. LinkedIn describes service discovery and direct contact, but its public Services page does not present the product as an escrow or freelancer payout system.
Quick selector: choose one primary channel and one backup
- Do you need public jobs now, and are you willing to write bids or proposals? Compare Freelancer.com and PeoplePerHour. Start with the one showing more relevant work during your observation window.
- Do you have focused portfolio proof and want clients to discover it? Test Contra. Treat job browsing as one route and portfolio discovery as another.
- Are you an experienced specialist willing to complete screening before accessing opportunities? Review Toptal’s application and talent requirements.
- Do you already have a credible professional identity, useful connections, or recommendations? Enable LinkedIn Services and test direct conversations.
- Did none of those answers feel convincing? Do not create five empty profiles. Improve one proof page and one clear service statement before adding another channel.
Your primary channel gets most of the 14-day test time. Your backup gets enough attention to show whether its model fits better. This keeps diversification from turning into five neglected accounts.
Five alternatives compared by workflow
| Platform | How you become discoverable | Entry and outreach | Platform payment role | Useful first test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contra | Portfolio, public job discovery, and profile based inbound interest | Open profile and job workflow | Contracts, invoices, and payments are part of the product | Publish one focused case study and save relevant jobs for seven days |
| Toptal | Matching and eligible jobs after acceptance | Application and multistage screening first | Network engagement workflow, with payment details documented in its talent FAQ | Review requirements and decide whether screening fits your experience and available time |
| Freelancer.com | Public projects, bids, profiles, and contests | Open signup and bidding, subject to account bid balance and requirements | Milestone Payments and project fees are part of the marketplace | Observe niche projects, then send a small set of tailored bids |
| PeoplePerHour | Public jobs, proposals, searchable freelancers, and packaged offers | Proposal and offer workflow | Deposits, invoices, project streams, and protected payments are part of the product | Compare proposal jobs with one narrow packaged offer |
| LinkedIn Services | Service pages, professional profile, network signals, search, and direct messages | Direct provider discovery and conversation | No escrow or freelancer payout role stated on the public Services page | Define one service, add proof, and start relevant direct conversations |
This table is a workflow comparison, not a ranking. It does not predict acceptance, lead volume, client quality, or income.
1. Contra: portfolio led discovery plus project workflow

Contra is the strongest fit here when you want a portfolio to support both inbound discovery and active job search. Its official jobs page invites freelancers to browse global and remote jobs, while the product also combines contracts, invoices, and payments. That makes it different from a portfolio site that only sends a visitor to your contact form.
Contra says freelancers keep 100 percent of what they earn through its commission free model. Read that as Contra’s platform commission claim, not proof that every payment route has zero processing, withdrawal, or foreign exchange cost. For route details, use the separate guide to check Contra payout timing and withdrawal costs.
Good first test: publish one case study for one buyer problem. Give it a specific outcome, scope, and role. Then observe relevant jobs and inbound activity for 14 days. If the profile attracts the wrong work, revise the service statement before adding more projects.
2. Toptal: screening before matched opportunities

Toptal belongs in a different category from open bidding sites. Its talent FAQ says applicants complete a multistage screening process. After acceptance, talent can view eligible jobs, apply to jobs that interest them, and be matched according to profile and availability. The FAQ says accepted talent can set availability between 0 and 50 hours per week.
This is not a beginner default. The useful question is whether your experience, specialist proof, and available time justify completing screening. Toptal does not guarantee that a particular applicant will be accepted or that accepted talent will receive a fixed amount of work. The same FAQ says work volume varies with client requirements and availability.
Good first test: read the application and talent requirements before starting. Compare your recent work with the disciplines and evidence Toptal asks for. Apply only if the screening model fits your current level and you can give it proper attention.
3. Freelancer.com: open bidding and contests

Freelancer.com is the closest open marketplace alternative in this list. Its official workflow page describes projects that receive competitive bids, profile comparison, chat, project awards, and Milestone Payments. The platform also supports contests, where freelancers submit entries and a client awards a prize.
The current official fees page says freelancers can sign up, create a profile, upload a portfolio, receive project notifications, discuss work, and enter contests without a signup charge. It also says free members initially receive six bids per month and that a minimum balance is required before bidding. For awarded work, the listed freelancer fee is 10 percent or 5 US dollars, whichever is greater, on fixed price projects, and 10 percent on hourly projects. These statements were checked August 9, 2026. Verify the bid balance and fee shown in your account because account conditions can change.
This guide stops at acquisition and project workflow. To estimate platform charges before payout, use the Freelancer.com fixed-price and hourly fee calculator. Use the separate guide to compare Freelancer.com withdrawal methods after you have a payment route to assess.
Good first test: observe projects in one narrow skill category before bidding. Note budget clarity, proposal count where visible, and how often you can write a genuinely specific response. Send a limited set of tailored bids. If every bid requires stretching beyond your proof, the issue is fit, not volume.
4. PeoplePerHour: proposals and packaged offers

PeoplePerHour combines two acquisition paths. Freelancers can respond to public jobs with proposals, and clients can browse packaged offers. Its official workflow page also describes deposits, project streams, invoices, and protected payments inside the platform.
The official freelancer commission page states that there is no signup fee or fee to search projects or post an offer. It lists service fee tiers based on lifetime billing with each buyer: 20 percent below 250 British pounds, 7.5 percent from 250 to 5,000 British pounds, and 3.5 percent above 5,000 British pounds, excluding VAT. It also states a minimum service fee of 1 British pound per invoice. These figures were checked August 9, 2026. VAT treatment and account conditions are not universal, so use the amount shown for your account and buyer relationship.
Good first test: choose one route first. If you prefer live demand, track relevant jobs and write selective proposals. If your service has a clear scope, publish one offer with a defined deliverable and boundary. Testing both at once without separate tracking makes it hard to see which path generated attention.
5. LinkedIn Services: direct discovery through a professional network

LinkedIn Services is useful when your professional identity and network can support direct discovery. Its public Services page says clients can browse providers or answer questions to receive up to five proposals, review experience, recommendations, and connections, then send a free message to a provider.
That flow is not the same as a payment marketplace. The public Services page does not state that LinkedIn handles freelancer escrow, invoices, withdrawals, or disputes for these service relationships. Agree on scope, contract terms, payment method, and dispute handling through an appropriate process before work begins.
Good first test: define one service on your profile in the language clients use. Add one proof item and ask whether your existing recommendations support that service. Then start relevant direct conversations. Count qualified replies, not connection growth.
What these alternatives do not solve
No platform fixes unclear positioning. If a client cannot tell who you help, what you deliver, and why your proof is relevant, moving the same generic profile to another site will preserve the problem.
No platform guarantees suitable work in your niche. A public jobs page can be open and still show few projects that match your skill, rate, timezone, or working style. Observe the actual inventory available to you instead of treating a platform category page as proof of demand.
Country and account availability also need a live check. This article does not claim that every platform, payment route, or feature is available in every country. Verify signup, identity requirements, supported services, taxes, and payment options for your account.
Payment economics remain a separate decision. Once you have a plausible work source, compare platform fees, withdrawal charges, and currency conversion. The guide on how to measure the FX spread after you get paid shows how to assess a real route without inventing a universal rate.
Finally, a second channel reduces dependence only if you maintain it. A dormant profile is not a backup. A focused proof page, a repeatable outreach habit, and a record of what happened are.
Your 14-day platform test scorecard
Use the scorecard for one primary platform and one backup. Record observations, not hopes. There are no benchmark thresholds here because suitable activity varies by skill, market, account, and positioning.
| Measure | Primary channel | Backup channel | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile readiness | Required fields completed, one clear service, relevant proof, and no known account blocker | ||
| Eligible opportunities observed | Jobs, matches, inquiries, or direct prospects that genuinely fit | ||
| Qualified actions sent | Tailored bids, proposals, applications, or direct messages | ||
| Replies and calls | Relevant responses and substantive conversations, kept separate | ||
| Time spent | Profile work, searching, writing, screening, and follow up time | ||
| Platform spend | Bids, memberships, tests, or other acquisition costs actually paid | ||
| Rule or availability blocker | Country, account, service, identity, payment, or application restriction encountered | ||
| Decision after day 14 | Continue, revise positioning, or stop, with one sentence of evidence |
A reply is useful evidence, but silence is evidence too. If you saw suitable opportunities and received no relevant response, review your proof and message. If you saw almost no suitable opportunities, stop forcing the channel and test a different model. If an account or country rule blocks the workflow, record it before spending more time.
Before moving an existing client
Finding future clients on Contra, Toptal, Freelancer.com, PeoplePerHour, or LinkedIn is separate from moving a relationship that began on Upwork or Fiverr. Existing platform terms may govern where the parties communicate, contract, or pay.
Do not treat this alternatives list as circumvention advice. For an Upwork origin relationship, review the current platform terms and the rules for moving an existing Upwork relationship. For Fiverr, review the current Fiverr terms and support guidance that apply to your order or contact. When in doubt, keep the existing relationship inside its required workflow while you build future business through an independent channel.
Methodology and source ledger
This is an evidence led selection, not an affiliate ranking. The shortlist includes five distinct acquisition models with accessible first party documentation. Reddit discussions were used only to identify recurring reader questions. They were not used for claims about fees, policy, eligibility, availability, client quality, or outcomes.
Official pages and screenshot evidence were checked August 9, 2026. Interfaces, fees, and account rules can change. If a current official page conflicts with this article, follow the current official page and report the discrepancy for correction.
