An approved Upwork payment is not always ready to withdraw. Hourly earnings normally become available ten days after the weekly billing period, on the following Wednesday. Fixed price milestone and Project Catalog funds normally clear five days after client approval; bonuses normally clear five days after the client’s payment is processed.
If your question is whether a fixed price milestone was funded and submitted in a way that can qualify for payment protection, use the Upwork fixed price payment protection checklist. This guide owns the later clearance clock; it does not decide whether a milestone qualified for protection.
Start with Manage finances > Transactions and open the contract. Upwork shows when the funds are expected to become available or arrive. If the balance says Pending or In review, check the platform clearance schedule. If it says Available, you can withdraw it, but the bank or payment provider delivery time is a separate clock.
Upwork’s published clearance times
| Payment type | Published availability |
|---|---|
| Hourly contract | Hours are billed Monday through Sunday; earnings normally become available ten days later, on the following Wednesday. Some eligible contracts may offer faster payments. |
| Fixed price milestone | Five days after the client approves the milestone. |
| Project Catalog | Five days after client approval. |
| Bonus | Five days after the client’s payment is processed. |
For the standard hourly cycle, Upwork says the billing week runs from Monday 00:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) through Sunday 23:59 UTC. Earnings then enter review, followed by a five day security period.
Check the right clock
- Open Manage finances > Transactions and select the relevant contract.
- Check the payment type and current status.
- If the payment is Pending or In review, compare it with the clearance table above.
- If the payment is Available, confirm that you have entered tax information and added an active withdrawal method.
- If you already withdrew the money, use the delivery rules for that withdrawal method.
A newly added withdrawal method takes three calendar days to activate. That security hold does not shorten or replace the earnings clearance period.
What the status on the Transactions page means
| Status shown | What it means | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Pending or In review | Earnings are still in Upwork’s review or security schedule and are not yet available to withdraw. | Compare the payment type with the clearance table; check the expected availability shown in Transactions. |
| Available | Earnings are ready for you to start a withdrawal. | Confirm tax information is entered and a withdrawal method is active and past its three day activation hold. |
| Withdrawn but not at the bank | The withdrawal has started; delivery time is now the provider or bank clock. | Count business days from processing for that payment rail, and include bank holidays. |
Available does not mean deposited
Once earnings move to Available, you can initiate a withdrawal. Upwork says Direct to Local Bank withdrawals should arrive within four business days. It processes same day requests only before 12:00 noon UTC; later requests move to the following business day. Contact the receiving bank if the payment has not arrived after four business days. Upwork says it can attempt a trace after eight business days.
Upwork processes wire transfers within one business day, but says they may take up to seven business days to reach the bank. It can trace a missing wire after eight business days. Bank holidays in the United States or destination country can delay both methods.
Worked example: say you withdraw an available balance by Direct to Local Bank on a Monday morning before the noon UTC cutoff and it is processed the same day. Under Upwork’s published timing you would expect the money to post by about the fourth business day after processing; a U.S. or destination country bank holiday pushes that count later. That window is delivery timing only, it starts after the platform clearance period, not at the date the milestone was approved.
The full sequence is:
work completed → client billing or approval → platform review/security → available balance → withdrawal initiated → provider/bank transit → posted by bank
Do not add every maximum and treat the result as a guaranteed arrival date. Each stage starts under different conditions.
Troubleshoot by status
- Pending or In review: confirm the contract type, approval or billing date, and the expected availability shown in Transactions.
- Available but withdrawal method inactive: confirm that tax information is complete and the method’s three calendar day activation period has ended.
- Withdrawn but not at the bank: count business days from processing, include bank holidays, and follow the support or trace timing for that payment rail.
