Quick answer: Do not sign a W-9 merely because Fiverr displays the form. Fiverr’s current public W-9 page says the form is required when Fiverr defines a freelancer as a U.S. person. The page checked on August 20 no longer explains the non-U.S. declaration flow, a universal deadline, or a correction sequence. If the prompt does not match your tax status, preserve the exact screen and ask authenticated Fiverr Support why it appears and which official path applies before certifying anything.
Checked August 20, 2026. This is a platform troubleshooting guide, not personal tax advice. Tax status is based on facts that can be more complicated than citizenship or current location. If you are unsure whether you are a U.S. person for federal tax purposes, ask a qualified tax professional before making a certification.
Why the request deserves a pause
A W-9 is not a generic identity form. The IRS says it is used to provide a correct taxpayer identification number to a requester that may need to file an information return. The certification on the form includes a statement that the payee is a U.S. person.
The IRS instructions for W-9 requesters go further: a foreign person may not provide Form W-9. That makes an unexpected W-9 prompt more than a minor profile typo. Signing it means certifying facts under penalties of perjury, including U.S. status and the accuracy of the taxpayer identification number.
Fiverr’s current W-9 collection page states that defining a freelancer as a U.S. person requires W-9 collection. It does not currently describe what a non-U.S. freelancer should see after a tax-status answer or how a mismatched prompt is corrected. Keep that missing platform detail separate from the IRS rule about who may provide Form W-9.
First, identify what Fiverr is actually asking
Before opening a support case, record the exact screen. A tax-status question, a blank W-9 form, and an error after submission are different states. The current public Fiverr page does not document every screen or error path, so quote the wording you actually see rather than assigning it a platform-defined label.
| What you see | What to record | What to check before acting |
|---|---|---|
| A question about U.S. tax status | The exact wording and any answer already shown | Use the IRS definition linked by Fiverr and answer only from your actual status |
| A blank W-9 form | The page URL, date, and account notice that opened it | Do not certify until the U.S.-person statement is accurate for you |
| An error after submission | The exact error text with tax identifiers removed | Do not infer which field failed; ask authenticated Fiverr Support to identify the official next step |
| An email with a link to tax details | The sender, subject, timestamp, and visible destination | Open Fiverr directly rather than using the email link and check for the same notice in your account |
Check these account details before contacting support
- The tax-status prompt. Record the exact answer or status visible in your Fiverr account, if one is shown, but do not change it repeatedly to test the interface.
- Your legal name and business type. An individual, a single-owner business and a separate legal entity may not use the same tax form. Do not assume that forming a company automatically makes you a U.S. person or automatically removes U.S. reporting questions.
- Your country and billing address. A wrong country, an old U.S. address or mismatched billing information can explain why a workflow needs review, but an address alone does not settle federal tax status.
- Previous account access. If another person configured the account, record that history for support. Never share login credentials or tax identifiers to let someone “fix” it for you.
- The source of the request. Confirm the notice exists inside Fiverr. Tax forms contain high-value identity data, so do not upload them through a buyer message, external form or unverified support account.
W-9 and W-8BEN are not interchangeable
W-9 documents U.S. status and a U.S. taxpayer identification number for the requester. W-8BEN is an IRS certificate used by a foreign individual who is the beneficial owner of certain income or an account holder documenting foreign status when a withholding agent or payer requests it.
That distinction does not mean every non-U.S. Fiverr seller should download a W-8BEN and send it to Fiverr. The IRS instructions say W-8BEN is given to the requester, not sent to the IRS, and they list situations where a different W-8 form, W-8ECI, Form 8233 or another document may apply. Fiverr’s current public W-9 page establishes that U.S.-person classification triggers W-9 collection; it does not instruct every foreign seller to upload W-8BEN.
Do not solve a form mismatch by guessing. Do not enter a fabricated Social Security number, copy another person’s TIN, use a random EIN, or submit W-8BEN through an unofficial channel. Ask Fiverr to explain why the W-9 prompt appears and which official path it expects for your account type.
A support message that keeps the issue specific
Use the authenticated Fiverr Help Center and keep the first message factual. You can adapt this:
My Fiverr account is showing a W-9 request. I do not believe I am a U.S. person for U.S. federal tax purposes, and I do not want to certify a form that does not match my status. Please explain why this prompt appears on my account and which official path I should use to correct a mismatch. I have attached a screenshot of the prompt with my tax identifiers removed.
Include the page URL, the time the prompt appeared, your account country and a redacted screenshot. Keep your full tax number, passport, bank details and unredacted tax form out of the initial message unless Fiverr requests them through a secure official channel.
If your Gigs are paused
If Fiverr shows a deadline, a Gig pause, or another account consequence, preserve the exact notice and date. The public W-9 article checked on August 20 does not publish a universal completion deadline or reactivation promise, so do not apply an older timing statement to every account. Ask authenticated Fiverr Support to confirm what the notice means for the account in front of you.
Take a screenshot of any pause notice, note which Gigs are affected, and ask support to confirm whether the notice is connected to the W-9 request. Do not delete and recreate Gigs or open another account as a test while you are waiting for an official answer.
Protect the data the form asks for
Fiverr says its W-9 flow can collect a full name, address and Social Security number, share relevant tax information with applicable U.S. tax authorities and service providers, and retain it as required by law. Fiverr also says the data is protected in transmission and that two-factor authentication is activated on the next login after completing the form.
Those safeguards do not make every request legitimate. Use the form only inside an authenticated Fiverr session. Check the domain, enable your own two-factor authentication, and never send a completed W-9 to a buyer. If identity verification is also blocking the account, handle it as a separate workflow using our guide to Fiverr identity verification.
Decision checklist
- Record whether you see a tax-status question, a blank W-9 form, or an exact error message.
- Do not sign W-9 unless the U.S. person certification is accurate for you.
- Record the exact prompt, legal name, entity type, country and billing address shown in the account.
- Verify the request inside Fiverr rather than through an email link.
- Do not self-submit W-8BEN unless Fiverr or another legitimate payer requests the appropriate form for your circumstances.
- Ask authenticated Fiverr Support which official path applies to a tax-status or form mismatch.
- Ask a qualified tax professional if your federal tax status is genuinely uncertain.
