Fiverr identity verification: how it works and what makes it fail

Fiverr identity verification can involve an official government ID, a live selfie, and in some cases phone verification. A material change now affects the cost question: some new freelancers may be required to pay a one-time ID verification fee. The official identity article states that possibility but does not name a standalone amount, so a guide should not invent one or copy the price of a different Fiverr product into that gap.

This article covers the identity check attached to a Fiverr account. Personal and business information before a first Gig is a related but separate onboarding flow. A W-9 request is a tax workflow, and an account suspension is an enforcement workflow. If the notice concerns enforcement rather than an ID check, use the Fiverr suspension appeal guide. If it concerns U.S. tax status, use the Fiverr W-9 mismatch checklist.

The current fee change, stated precisely

Fiverr now says that some new freelancers may be required to pay a one-time fee to complete ID verification. That sentence has three boundaries. It applies to some users, not all users. It refers to new freelancers, not every existing seller or buyer. It describes a one-time verification fee, not a monthly membership.

The current “Verify your identity” article does not publish a standalone amount for this fee. If your in-account flow presents a fee, read the amount, currency, taxes, refund terms, and payment description shown there before paying. Save a screenshot or receipt from the official account flow. An amount posted in a forum, an email, or a different help article does not establish what your account is being charged.

Seller Plus Kickstart is separate. Fiverr says that if a freelancer is enrolled in Kickstart, the ID verification fee is included as part of the membership at no extra cost. Kickstart itself is a monthly subscription with its own subscription and payment terms. Its published subscription price pays for the membership package, which includes several benefits. That subscription price must not be relabeled as the standalone one-time ID verification fee.

Fee and membership distinction

New freelancer sees an ID fee in the account Some new freelancers may be required to pay a one-time fee for ID verification. The policy does not mean every new freelancer pays, and the identity article does not state a universal amount. Read and preserve the charge details shown in the official in-account flow.

A Kickstart price appears in a help article That price is for a recurring monthly subscription and its package of benefits. It is not the published amount of the standalone one-time ID verification fee. Keep the subscription charge and verification fee as separate accounting lines.
An email asks for ID or payment Fiverr says it never asks for ID verification via email. A logo, familiar wording, or sender display name does not make the request official. Do not use the email link. Open Fiverr directly and check the account flow.

Start in the account, never from an email request

Fiverr’s current article says it will never ask for ID verification via email. That is unusually clear wording and should control the safety advice. An email that asks you to upload an ID, pay a verification charge, enter banking details, or sign in through a link should not be treated as the start of Fiverr’s official identity process.

Open Fiverr by entering the site address yourself or using the official app. On a computer, sign in, select your profile image, open Account settings, choose “Personal & business info,” and look for the Verify button. That is the current path published in the help article. Customer Support cannot start identity verification for you and cannot verify an ID sent through a support ticket.

Do not send your ID in an ordinary email or attach it to a support request in an attempt to bypass the verification tool. Fiverr specifically says users should refrain from sending an ID through Customer Support because support cannot verify it that way. The secure verification flow needs to perform the document and selfie checks itself.

Prepare the right device and original document

Fiverr tells users to log in on a computer and have a smartphone with a working camera ready. Camera permission must be enabled in the phone browser. Use a physical, valid ID from the types offered for your country in the verification flow. Fiverr lists examples such as a driving license, passport, permanent residency card, identity card, residency permit, or diplomatic passport, but the available options vary by country.

Digital or online copies are not accepted. Take a clear photo of the original ID during the flow, make sure every required field is visible and legible, and avoid saved images or screenshots. Enter your name exactly as it appears on the ID and select the correct document type. Select the region that matches the ID.

The software uses a third-party identity service. Fiverr says the software validates that the document image comes from an official government ID and that the selfie is authentic. It then compares the uploaded ID and selfie to determine whether they are authentic matching images and whether the document represents the person submitting it. A verified result still is not a universal guarantee about a freelancer’s identity; Fiverr says the process relies on information supplied by the freelancer.

What commonly blocks verification

Problem Why it conflicts with the published process Current corrective step
Saved image, screenshot, or photo of a scan Fiverr requires the original physical ID and says scanned images of a person or ID cannot be verified. Restart with the physical document and a live camera capture.
Blurry, cropped, covered, or unreadable image The ID information and face must be clearly visible. Improve lighting, clean the lens, remove obstructions, and hold the camera steady.
VPN is active Fiverr’s troubleshooting guidance tells users to disable a VPN during verification. Disable the VPN and retry through the official account flow.
Wrong region or document type The selected region should match the ID, and the chosen type should describe the submitted document. Correct both selections before submitting again.
Browser or session problem Cookies, cached data, permissions, or browser behavior can interrupt the camera flow. Clear cache and cookies, confirm camera access, or try another supported browser.
Immediate repeat after failure Fiverr says to wait at least 6 hours before another attempt. Record the error, wait the stated period, then retry once with corrected inputs.

Deadline and retry checklist

Fiverr says a user must verify as soon as an account notification arrives and has 14 days to complete the process. Failure to do so removes the ability to sell. Treat the date of the in-account notification as the start of the deadline. Do not substitute the date of a community post or an unrelated email.

  1. Capture the in-account notification and its date without exposing private account information.
  2. Confirm that the Verify button appears under Account settings, then Personal & business info.
  3. Read any fee disclosure inside the account. Record the amount and terms actually shown; do not fill the missing amount from the Kickstart subscription article.
  4. If you rely on Kickstart inclusion, confirm that the account shows an active enrolled membership, not only an invitation or eligibility message.
  5. Prepare a computer, a smartphone with camera access, and the original physical ID accepted for the selected country.
  6. Enter the name exactly as shown on the ID, choose the correct ID type and region, and submit live, clear images.
  7. If the attempt fails, save the exact error, correct the likely input or browser issue, and wait at least 6 hours before retrying.
  8. If the Verify button is missing or the problem persists, contact Fiverr Support for assistance. Ask for the next account-specific step, but do not send the ID through the ticket.
  9. Keep receipts, case numbers, and screenshots from official account pages. Redact document numbers before storing troubleshooting notes outside Fiverr.

Privacy and data retention

Fiverr’s current data-protection article is now at article ID 13127840321937. The older package pointed to a different help-center ID, so the source URL has been corrected in this update. Fiverr says the copy of the identification document and selfie are kept for 30 days. After that period, it says it retains the user’s name, date of birth, gender, hashed ID number, identification-document type, and document country.

Fiverr says identification data is used to verify the account or reported identity, support marketplace safety, enforce its terms, and comply with applicable laws. It says the ID will not be used for marketing or shared with other users. Its data article also says a user may ask Fiverr to delete the information, while warning that deletion can result in account restrictions in some cases.

What to send support if the flow still fails

Send the account username, the date of the in-account verification notice, the page where the Verify button should appear, the exact error text, the device and browser used, the time of the last attempt, and the troubleshooting steps already completed. If a payment was taken, include the official receipt or transaction reference. Do not attach the ID or selfie to the ticket.

Ask support whether the account is currently required to verify, whether a retry is available, and which in-account step applies. If the dispute concerns a charge, describe it exactly as the receipt does. Do not call a Kickstart subscription charge an ID fee unless Fiverr’s own receipt labels it that way.
